Billie Eillish - Bury a Friend

According to a January 2019 Alternate Press article, “bury a friend” is written from the perspective of a monster under Billie Eilish’s bed. The track details a confusing relationship with this ‘entity’ and ambiguously sets her up to be the monster itself.

A snippet of “bury a friend” was teased by Eilish on her Instagram page, as well as on Twitter and YouTube, on January 28, 2019. The visual depicts Billie’s face being grabbed by several gloved hands that reach in from off screen, until the closing lyrics and album title are displayed. She posted on Instagram the following day, announcing her debut album would be titled WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?

The song itself features a Prismizer effect, which manipulates pitch and frequency characteristics to achieve a choral phase, much like Eilish’s other January release, “WHEN I WAS OLDER.” Her friend Mehki Raine makes a few short appearances on the song and seems to be talking directly to Eilish.

Many fans believe an episode of sleep paralysis, which Billie shared on her Instagram story, was one of the inspirations for the song. In a reply to an Instagram comment, Eilish alluded to the validity of this theory.

On February 22, 2019, Billie posted a video in collaboration with YouTube Music, where she and her brother Finneas explain the meaning behind the song and the creation of it. When asked by Radio Energy for her favorites from the album, Eilish chose “bury a friend” as one of them.

The song focuses on themes of guilt, as revealed by Billie in an interview with  Vice: ‘Bellyache’ is about the concept of guilt, when you do things in the moment because you feel so strongly about them. In the end you’re left with the decision you made. That line—"I thought that I’d feel better, but now I gotta bellyache"—is about how you kinda know that you’re the worst but you don’t care. It’s about a psychopath who regrets being a psychopath but doesn’t really care.
